LOUISIANA IRIS

The name “Iris”, comes from the Greek word for rainbow, which describes Louisiana Iris perfectly as they come in a huge range of colours and hues. Common names include water iris, swamp iris, Dixie iris. The name Hexagona, refers to the six angled seed head. Iris Hexagona is a name accepted by the RHS.
Family; Iridaceae. Genus; Iris. Series; Hexagonae which include all 5 species of Iris fulva, Iris Hexagona, Iris brevicaulis, Iris giganticaerulea and Iris nelsonii. These 5 species are closely related and each boasting unique characteristics that we enjoy in our modern hybrid cultivars, as the 5 species will inter-breed with each other freely but not with other iris. Only in south Louisiana do all 5 species occur together.
Originating from the swamplands of Louisiana in the U.S.A. it is the official state wildflower.
Helping to filter waterways they are suited to bog or water gardens but also look great in water feature pots combined with other water loving plants. Louisiana iris, are not however restricted to wet areas, indeed they grow well on-mass in moist garden beds. They can also be used as cut flowers for indoor arrangements.
Louisiana’s are a clump forming evergreen perennial that grow from a rhizome.
Not only are they very easy to grow but they a captivating flowers that add a splash of colour and elegance to gardens, ponds and water features.
